Native Plant Trust: Go Botany Discover thousands of New England plants

Family: Pinaceae — pine family

Pines are cone-bearing trees that are generally evergreen, though larches (in the genus Larix) are deciduous. Older trees typically have deeply grooved bark. The leaves are needle-like, and may be single or grouped into bundles called fascicles. Species produce an aromatic resin. Plants have both pollen cones and seed cones on the same individual. The pollen cones produce pollen each year and may be solitary or in clusters at the end of stems. The seed cones are much larger and mature over 1-3 seasons. The ovule-bearing cones may be solitary or clustered. Each of the woody scales in the cone subtends a bract and 2 winged seeds.
