Genus: Bolboschoenus — tuber-bulrush
Observation of anther color, floral scale translucence, and anatomy of the achenes are necessary for identification of Bolboschoenus species. For anther color, use dried specimens or opened anthers on living plants. Floral scale translucence is best viewed under a dissecting microscope at 10–15 power. Lift the floral scale slightly by placing a narrow probe or similar tool under it to see how much light passes through. Achenes should be cut in half with a sharp blade. Hybrids are relatively common. References: Browning et al. (1995), Smith (2002).
