Facts
Like its cousin, Shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), Shellbark hickory produces platy bark that separates into broad plates; its species name, laciniosa, means "folded." It is native to New York, southwest to Oklahoma, but has been introduced into Massachusetts. This species produces the largest nuts of any hickory. Its supple inner bark has been used by the Cherokee and Omaha tribes to make baskets, chairs, and snowshoes.
