Facts

Being a prairie plant with exceptionally deep roots, New Jersey redroot is well adapted to persist after fires. The plant fixes nitrogen through its symbiosis with bacteria. It is a small shrub usually less than 3 feet (1 meter) tall, with tiny white flowers in erect, oval clusters. The astringent leaves were used by colonists as a substitute for imported tea during the American Revolution. Deer use the twigs throughout the year as a major food source. Caterpillars of the common Spring azure butterfly (Celastrina ladon) eat the leaves and are tended by specialized ants as they develop. The adult azures forage on the nectar.
