Genus: Potamogeton — pondweed
Species of Potamogeton produce one or both of two types of leaves—submersed and floating. All species of Potamogeton produce submersed leaves, which are very thin and translucent.. Floating leaves are thick and opaque. Submersed leaves may be hard to find later in the season due to decay or wave action. Oil glands, referred to as nodal glands, occur in many species. Look for a pair of green- to gold-colored circular bumps at the nodes. They are sometimes difficult to detect; you should look at several nodes to see if you can find them.
