Dear mrsdixon2007, your cultivated plant may be a species of jade (in the genus Crassula, the commonly cultivated species is Crassula ovata). The leaves do appear different than the usual form of this plant that is grown indoors (but hopefully this will give you a place to start your study to determine its identity).
