Facts

Virginia serpentaria, although globally secure and present in 26 eastern states, is very rare in New England, currently only found in a few sites in Connecticut. It inhabits a variety of upland forest communities, usually in dry, rich, rocky, deciduous or mixed-deciduous forests. Although historically used by Native Americans for its medicinal properties, the marketing of this species is banned in the United States and other countries because of known carcinogenic and nephrotoxic effects of aristolochic acid.
